I have a HP Pavilion Laptop that I was preparing to give to another person so I started the Windows 10 Reset process and asked to have all personal files removed. The process took a while and let it run all night.

During the night I looked at the screen and saw a question that I did not read completely as I was just a wake for a moment before going back to sleep. The questions asked something that want a respond to press the F1 key or another key.

I pressed the F1 key and went back to sleep. Upon waking the system was on though nothing was on the screen and it did not respond to any clicks of the mouse or keyboard. I shut the laptop off and restarted. The system boots with the HP logo and the spinning circle at the bottom of the screen, with a quick flash of the words Preparing and then the screen goes blank. All I see is the cursor move around the screen and always the cursor returns to the center of the screen.

What can I do to get this laptop to work again so I can give it to another person to use? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. I did not change anything that I am aware of, not sure if the BIOS reset would have changed something.

No dialogue has come up around this and I have not seen any type of command prompt ever come up in the boot sequences.

Okay, I tried two things. I started the laptop three times and when it got to the Preparing message I pressed the power button to turn off the laptop battery and power adapter installed. On the fourth restart I let the laptop start and saw the same sequence as noted earlier and still get the blank screen with the same cursor movements.

The Win Media Disc and now accessible. When it loads I am able to access the repair option and get a screen with: Continue to environment recovery, Use a device, Use another operating system, troubleshoot, and turn off your PC options. BTW do I need to change the boot order back to something different than having the CD drive boot first??? I have tried the Install option using the new install so it takes all the old windows files and places them in a window.

This option has allowed the laptop to restart and seems to be loading Windows in a functional way. This will take a while and will let you know if this works. I will try the boot sequences to see if I get to the diagnostics mode. I will shut off the computer three times when I see the Preparing message come up and on the fourth start let it run and it should come up the diagnostics mode, correct?

Please help – what else can I try? If these easy solutions don’t work, you’re likely dealing with video adapter issues. If you have a discrete video card, try removing your card and switching to your motherboard’s integrated video. Does your monitor work?

Then the video card is the problem. Try updating to the latest driver version available or, if you recently did that, revert to an old driver. Also check the video card for obvious signs of defect, like a broken cooling fan or charred electronics. Should the monitor not work when connected to integrated graphics, however, you may have a monitor issue.

Check it by connecting to another computer. If the monitor does work with another PC, but not with yours, then you’re probably looking at a hardware fault elsewhere that impacts the video card’s ability to work. Your Windows black screen error could be down to the motherboard, the power supply, or the hard drive. All computers generate heat. This heat must be removed to keep the system running; high temperatures can cause components to lock-up and become damaged.

Fortunately, computers are built to shut down before that occurs. Overheating will usually result in a featureless black computer screen, which may or may not be followed by a restart. In many cases, overheating is caused by the video card or the processor. As noted, you should suspect the video card if you receive a black screen when the computer otherwise appears to be working the fans are on, the hard drive light active, etc.

If the processor has overheated, the black screen will usually prompt a reboot or automatic shutdown of the PC. Overheating can often be solved by opening your PC and cleaning out the cobwebs. Hit Enter. On the right side of the screen, double-click Shell. Check that the Value data section reads explorer.
